Iran and five allied nations presented a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), urging the prohibition of attacks or threats against nuclear facilities under safeguards, following U.S. and Israeli bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities in June’s 12-Days War, which also resulted in the loss of civilian lives and damaged civic infrastructure.

“Iran along with China, Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Belarus have submitted a draft resolution on prohibition of all forms of attack and threats of attack against nuclear sites and facilities under IAEA safeguards,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismaeil Baghaei reported on Tuesday on the social network X.

The draft resolution was presented to the UN nuclear agency at the IAEA General Conference, which began Monday in Vienna.

According to Baghaei, the measure aims to defend “the integrity of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).”

“As our draft reconfirms, all countries enjoy inalienable right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and are entitled to effective guarantees against any attack or threat of attack,” he added.

Mohamed Eslami, director of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, sharply denounced the Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites during Monday’s IAEA General Conference, calling them breaches of international law. He also condemned the silence of the UN nuclear watchdog and Security Council, attributing their failure to condemn the attacks to pressure from Washington.
